I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about what specific structural, risk, size, or other issues handicap BDC"s. It appears that the ability for a startup to maintain a "tight ship" automatically decreases, despite the best intentions of the the company. A few things I note:

1. Founder's talent / passion gets diluted as the company gets bigger
2. Accounting sometimes forces decisions that do not enhance "intrinsic value" of company, just accounting value.
3. No longer makes sense to take business risks once company has assets to lose
4. CYA moves (Managers choose options based on covering their *ss). For example, choosing the "brand name" company to outsource marketing to. If anything were to go wrong, it cant be YOUR Fault.

These things, as well as other aspects, create opportunities for Startups as they preclude BDC's from participating in some business activities.

"They do not risk everything, work outrageous hours and put themselves under untold pressure because they want to." Is that a typos? Is it supposed to be "they risk everything"?

Anyway, this is a great article, excellent use of metaphor.
